Everyone needs a good horror movie night with friends, family and/or loved ones. Lucky for you, us misfits LOVE horror and will give you the recommendations based on the type subgenre you're looking for!
New to the genre? Need to ease lightly into the world of horror? Here are our top 5 suggestions!
Halloween (1978) - The OG, Mr. Strong Silent type - never let's the girl chase him LOL! This movie is a classic slasher filled with suspense, drama and blood! Every Halloween, you'll see at least 10 or more people dressed up as the killer Michael Myers!
Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - Another OG - it's a supernatural slasher where the way you survive is not sleeping lol! Freddy Krueger is our killer in this one - fun fact you see a very young Johnny Depp make an appearance. This is also a Wes Craven movie.
Friday the 13th (1980) - so while in this one the notorious killer known from the franchise (Jason Vorhees) isn't the killer in this one, it gives you a glimpse into how he comes to be.
The Ring (2002) - now this is a remake of a terrifying Japanese film but if you want to ease into the horror and not get totally scared out of your mind this one is a good one to watch. The premise of the movie revolves around a creepy VHS, a well and the fact that once you watch the movie you die in 7 days!
An American Haunting (2005) - A supernatural horror that revolves around the legend of the Bell Witch and the hauntings that terrorized a family during the 1800s! If you'd like to hear more about it you can check out episode here https://open.spotify.com/episode/1vQaFkWk39U1DOPllswQNk?si=KrkuNvOzR8m2Xu1PIUX0g Looking for good slasher flicks??
Scream (1996) - A Wes Craven cult classic that turned a simple question of "What's your favorite scary movie?" into something more sinister. With Ghostface running around terrorizing and killing off various high schoolers this flick is sure to keep everyone invested till the very end!
Child's Play (1988) - Supernatural slasher where the killer is a possessed child's doll (if you have ever seen a My Buddy doll this is what he looks like). The doll happens to be inhabited by the spirit of a serial killer.
Valentine (2001) - A circle of girlfriends being picked off by a serial killer in a cupid mask. This one while not super scary is a good flick and reminds you why you should treat people with kindness.
Pearl (2022) - One of many successful horror films with Mia Goth as the lead. This film has a female lead that leaves you in the end saying "Good for her".
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) - Another film where high schoolers are the target of a crazed killer wanting revenge this movie will make anyone think twice when leaving someone for dead on the side of the road again.
Movies around religion and possessions
11. The First Omen (2024) - this movie serves as a prequel to the cult classing movie from the 70s known as The Omen. This film will have you on the edge of your seat making you question any and all motives of those in high positions within the church. You can check out Nino's review of the movie on our episode - https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/PQYkJgth5Jb
12. Late Night with the Devil (2024) - While this film revolves around the filming of a late night tv show in the 70s don't let that deter you, the show host has a guest on that happens to be possessed by a demon and will show you to what lengths those looking to break into Hollywood are willing to go to to taste that ultimate success.
13. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) - A Mortician and his grandson encounter things outside of their realm as a deceased body of a Jane Doe is dropped off at their morgue one evening. This movie is wildly underrated and often overlooked. The twists that come in this movie will leave your head spinning.
14. The Exorcist (1973) - a movie inspired by a novel that was inspired by a real life case, The Exorcism will have you looking a pea soup differently by the end of it. A young girl is possessed by a demon and a priest travels to assist in an exorcism in the hopes of saving her life before the demon claims her.
15. Immaculate (2024) - Sydney Sweeney shows off her scream queen side in this film that will have you (again) questioning the church. The film follows a young soon to be nun as she finds out the terrifying secrets the convent is hiding. You can catch Nino's review as well on this by following the link in movie suggestion number 11.
